What Is a Boot Jack — And What Makes a Pate Ranch Boot Jack Different?
Share
If you wear cowboy boots, you probably already know the value of a good boot jack. If you don’t, you may be wondering what exactly one is and why anyone needs one.
A boot jack, sometimes called a boot puller or boot remover, is a simple tool designed to help you take off your boots without bending over, tugging on the heel, or asking someone else to pull them off for you.
You place one foot on the back of the boot jack, slide the heel of the other boot into the U-shaped opening, and pull your foot upward. The jack holds the boot in place while your foot slides out. Simple idea. But like most things, there is a big difference between something that simply gets the job done and something that is made to last.
Boot Jacks Have Been Around for Generations
Boot jacks are nothing new. They have been used for generations by cowboys, ranchers, farmers, and anyone who regularly wears boots. And there is a reason they have stuck around: they work.
A good boot jack also helps protect your boots. Instead of kicking one boot off with the toe of the other or repeatedly pulling and twisting on the heel, the jack gives you a controlled way to remove your boots.
For us, though, a boot jack shouldn't have to look like a piece of equipment you hide in the closet when company comes over. That is where Pate Ranch Creations does things a little differently.
We Didn't Invent the Boot Jack. We Just Thought It Could Be Better.
There are plenty of inexpensive boot jacks on the market. Some are plastic. Some are thin pieces of wood. Some are mass produced and meant to be purely functional.
That isn't what we make.
At Pate Ranch Creations, we approached the boot jack like we approach the rest of our products: if we're going to make it, let's make one we're proud to put our name on.
Our boot jacks are made from scratch in our Texas shop using quality hardwoods such as black walnut, pecan, and oak. Depending on the style, we pair the wood with genuine leather, brass or antique-style hardware, detailed engraving, and personalized designs.
The end result is still a hardworking boot jack. It just happens to be a really good-looking one.
What Makes a Pate Ranch Boot Jack Different?
Real Hardwood
Wood matters.
Our premium boot jacks aren't designed around the cheapest material we can find. We use substantial hardwoods selected for their durability, character, and natural grain.
Our signature boot jack is made from premium black walnut, while our Ranchwood collection showcases woods such as Texas pecan.
Because we work with real wood, every piece has its own grain and character. No two are exactly alike.
Genuine Leather Where It Counts
One detail that is easy to overlook is the area where the boot actually makes contact with the jack. We use genuine leather around the heel opening on many of our designs. Besides adding to the finished look, it provides a softer contact point between the wood and your boot. This means no scratched boots.
On our premium designs, leather isn't an afterthought or decoration. It is part of what makes the boot jack look and feel finished.
Made in Texas
This one matters to us. Our boot jacks aren't imported and then personalized in Texas. We make them here. From cutting and shaping the wood to adding the leather, hardware, engraving, printing, and final details, our boot jacks are made in our shop at Pate Ranch in Texas. There is a difference between decorating a product and actually making one. We are makers and we make the entire thing from scratch.
Personalization That Makes It Yours
A boot jack also happens to make a pretty darn good canvas. We can personalize many of our designs with names, ranch brands, company logos, monograms, university designs, special messages, and custom artwork. That has turned what was traditionally a simple ranch tool into one of our favorite custom Western gifts.
We have made boot jacks for birthdays, retirements, graduations, corporate gifts, ranch owners, business partners, universities, and people who simply wanted something special for their own home.
More Than Something to Take Your Boots Off
This is probably the biggest difference between the boot jack we make and the way we think about the product. We don't believe you should have to put it away.
A Pate Ranch boot jack is meant to live beside the door, in the mudroom, at the ranch, in the lodge, or wherever your boots come off at the end of the day. It is functional enough to use every day but nice enough to become part of the room. And when given as a gift, it has something many gifts don't have anymore: a purpose. It isn't another thing destined for a drawer. It gets used.
A Texas-Made Gift That Can Last for Years
There is something we love about taking an old, incredibly simple idea and making it better. That pretty well sums up our boot jacks. They aren't complicated. They don't need batteries, an app, or a 47-page instruction manual. They just work. But when you combine a time-tested design with beautiful hardwood, genuine leather, detailed craftsmanship, personalization, and the fact that it is made right here in Texas, you end up with something more than a tool for taking off your boots. You end up with a piece worth keeping.
