How to Choose a Boot Jack

A boot jack is a pretty simple tool, but that doesn't mean they're all made the same. If you're buying one for yourself or giving one as a gift, a few details make a big difference in how it looks, feels, and holds up over time.

Start With the Wood

The first thing we look at is the material itself. A good boot jack should feel solid under your foot and have enough weight and structure to stay put while you're using it.

At Pate Ranch Creations, we use real hardwoods such as black walnut and Texas pecan. Besides being durable, hardwood gives each boot jack its own natural grain and character. No two pieces are exactly alike, and that's part of what we like about working with real wood.

Size Matters More Than You Might Think

A boot jack needs enough length and width to give you a stable platform while still being easy to keep near the door, mudroom, ranch house, or lodge.

Smaller boot jacks can certainly get the job done, but a more substantial design tends to feel sturdier and more comfortable to use. It's one of those products where a little extra size and weight can make a noticeable difference.

Look at the Heel Opening

This is one of the most important details, especially if you care about your boots. On many of our boot jacks, we use genuine leather around the heel opening. That gives the boot a softer contact point than bare wood and helps protect the heel from scratches and unnecessary wear. It also makes the finished piece look a whole lot better.

Construction Matters

A boot jack should be more than a thin piece of material cut into the right shape. Pay attention to the thickness of the wood, how the pieces are assembled, the hardware, and the overall finish. At Pate Ranch, our boot jacks are made from scratch in our Texas shop. We cut and shape the hardwood, add the leather and hardware, personalize the design, and finish each piece here. We aren't buying an imported boot jack and adding a name to it. We actually make the boot jack.

Choose One You'll Want to Keep Out

A boot jack is supposed to be useful, but there's no reason it can't look good too.

For us, the best boot jack is one that works every day and still looks right at home beside the door. Add a ranch brand, family name, company logo, or custom design, and a simple tool becomes a pretty great Western gift.
