A Texas Legacy: Why Texas Runs Deep at Pate Ranch Creations

At Pate Ranch Creations, our love for Texas isn't something we dreamed up for a product line. It's part of our family story. James' family lineage reaches back to Joel Walter Robison, a man whose name is woven into the history of the Texas Revolution.

Robison came to Texas with his family in 1831 and became involved in the fight for Texas independence. He fought in several early engagements before serving in the Texas Army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836.

The following day, Joel Walter Robison was among the small group of Texans who captured Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Historical accounts record that Santa Anna was brought back to the Texan camp riding double on Robison's horse.

His service to Texas continued after the Revolution. Sam Houston later commissioned him as a first lieutenant in the Texas Rangers, and Robison also served in the Texas Legislature and as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1875. Today, he is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, where his monument recognizes him as a veteran of San Jacinto and “One of the Captors of Santa Anna.”

That history makes our connection to Texas a little more personal.

James and I have always loved creating pieces that reflect Texas, ranch life, western heritage, and the traditions that come with them. From black walnut boot jacks and leather goods to Texas-inspired gifts, much of what we make naturally comes back to the place we call home.

There is something pretty special about creating Texas products today while knowing someone in James' family played a very real role in shaping the Texas we know.

We certainly don't compare making a boot jack or engraving leather to fighting for Texas independence. But we do believe history is worth remembering, craftsmanship is worth preserving, and family stories like Joel's are worth passing along.

Pate Ranch Creations may be a modern shop filled with lasers, CNC equipment, leather tools, and plenty of sawdust, but behind it is something much older.
